CIAL Garners Global Acclaim at Green Airports Recognition 2025 for Solar Innovation

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has once again earned international recognition by securing a prestigious award at the Green Airports Recognition 2025, hosted by Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East. This honor underscores CIAL’s ongoing commitment to environmental leadership within the aviation industry.

Award-Winning Terrain-Based Solar Project

The accolade celebrates CIAL’s pioneering terrain-based solar power project in Payyannur, Kerala’s Kannur district. Recognized in the 6–15 million passengers per annum category, the project exemplifies sustainable innovation by generating solar energy without altering the land’s natural topography, preserving the environment while producing clean power.

Setting the Standard in Sustainable Aviation

With this achievement, CIAL joins a select group of airports across Asia-Pacific and West Asia known for championing environmentally responsible operations. ACI’s Green Airports Recognition program honors impactful green initiatives that contribute to a more sustainable global aviation ecosystem.

Recognition Ceremony and Leadership Message

S. Suhas, Managing Director of CIAL, accepted the award from ACI President S.G.K. Kishore during a ceremony in New Delhi. In his remarks, Suhas reaffirmed CIAL’s dedication to integrating sustainability into airport operations while expanding infrastructure and green energy capabilities.

Innovative Approach to Renewable Energy

Commissioned in 2022, the award-winning solar plant covers 35 acres and stands out for its eco-sensitive design that maintains the natural terrain. This innovative approach reinforces CIAL’s status as a global leader in sustainable airport management.

Continuing Solar Leadership

As the first airport in the world to operate entirely on solar power, CIAL continues to expand its renewable energy footprint, now boasting a total installed solar capacity of 50 megawatts. The airport remains focused on driving growth through environmentally responsible strategies.

Endorsement of Excellence

In its official statement, ACI International highlighted CIAL’s project as one of the most outstanding submissions in the 2024 Green Airports Recognition program. This global acknowledgment further strengthens CIAL’s reputation as a trailblazer in green airport infrastructure and operations.
